How to Find Your Personal Style

Updated: Aug 6

Hello style lovers! Today’s write-up comes to you from a place of self-discovery. Finding your style is an endlessly magical journey – it’s not just about clothing; it’s about expressing your personality, individuality, and the story you want to tell.

Let’s explore ways you can craft a fashion journey that’s authentically, uniquely, and wonderfully you!

Exploration and Inspiration: Getting to Know You

Okay, first things first, let’s get to know you a bit better.

What makes you feel like the superstar you are? Dive into your comforts, favourite colours, and whether you’re all about comfy casual, or chic and tailored.

Understanding what makes you tick is like the key to unlocking your personal style. Because, after all, your style is all about what makes you feel fabulous.

Where do I start, you ask?

  • Start in your wardrobe! Pull out the pieces you love and wear regularly and ask yourself why you love them (or why you’ve left them to collect dust). Any common threads amongst these pieces (pun totally intended)? It might be the colour, fit, fabric or style of the garment that you really love. Understanding the “why” behind your choices is a key step to defining your personal style.

  • Create a mood board with images that resonate with you (fashion, art, nature, anything that ignites your style vibe) – this visual representation can be a powerful way to see your aesthetic preferences. Use platforms like Pinterest or social media to start exploring what you like and don’t like and gather inspiration. It’s likely that you’ll see similarities emerge in the inspiration you’re collating. How does this align with the pieces in your wardrobe that you already have and love?

  • Consider your lifestyle: How and where do you spend your time? Do you work from home? Do you have kids? How do you spend your weekend? It’s important to choose clothes that integrate with your lifestyle. For example, if you work from home two days per week and spend the other five looking after kids under five you likely won’t have/need eight different high end suits in your closet…you feel me?

Defining Your Style: Choose Some Key Words

Now that you’ve got a mishmash of inspirations, let’s give them the Marie Kondo treatment and sort them out. Are you feeling the clean vibes of minimalism, the retro charm of vintage, the carefree boho look, or a cool street-smart swagger?

Identifying some key words to describe your style (or the style you aspire to) will set the stage for your fashion adventure. Use these words to guide you when adding new items to your wardrobe to ensure they align with your style.

Start by looking at your favourite wardrobe items and the inspiration you gathered…how would you describe them? Need some inspiration? I’ve listed 10 below to get you started. And remember, your personal style might be a blend of several (or completely unique).

Use these as inspiration, but never be afraid to define your own style narrative!

  1. Classic Elegance: Characterised by timeless pieces that exude sophistication. Think tailored blazers, crisp white shirts, and A-line skirts. Neutral colours and simple, clean lines are key elements.

  2. Bohemian Chic: For a free-spirited, eclectic vibe. Embrace flowing maxi dresses, fringe details, and earthy tones. Incorporate patterns like paisley or floral prints to capture the boho essence.

  3. Casual Comfort: Perfect for those who prioritise comfort without sacrificing style. This style often includes basics like jeans, cozy sweaters, and versatile sneakers. It's all about effortless, laid-back vibes.

  4. Minimalist Marvel: A pared-down aesthetic focusing on simplicity and functionality. Stick to a neutral colour palette, clean lines, and uncomplicated silhouettes. Less is more in the minimalist world.

  5. Edgy Streetwear: Channel your inner urbanite with streetwear elements. Think graphic tees, oversized hoodies, distressed denim, and statement sneakers. Embrace bold accessories and unconventional pairings.

  6. Vintage Vibes: Draw inspiration from past eras, whether it's the roaring '20s, the groovy '70s, or the eclectic '90s. Thrift stores and vintage boutiques are your best friends for unique finds.

  7. Trendy Explorer: Always on the lookout for the latest trends? This style is for the fashion-forward. Keep an eye on fashion magazines, runways, and influencers to stay ahead of the curve.

  8. Sporty Chic: For the love of athleisure – a fusion of athletic wear and casual style. Sneakers, joggers, and oversized hoodies are staples. Incorporate sporty elements like leggings, baseball caps, and tailored tees into your daily looks for an effortlessly cool vibe.

  9. Romantic Whimsy: Soft, feminine, and dreamy. Lace details, floral prints, and pastel hues are common. This style often embraces skirts and dresses with a touch of whimsical charm.

  10. Artsy Eclecticism: Mix and match patterns, colours, and textures with artistic flair. This style is all about expressing your creativity through your wardrobe. Embrace unique accessories and unconventional pairings.

If certain elements from different categories resonate with you, there's no rule saying you can't blend them into your own, unique aesthetic. It's all about expressing yourself authentically, so go bold!

Body Beauty: Because You Are Awesome

Now, let's talk body love. Dress for the body you have, and watch the magic happen. It's all about celebrating you, not squeezing into trends that don't get your fabulousness.

There is no one-size-fits-all in the world of fashion, and that's a beautiful thing! Embrace your body shape, whether it's an hourglass, inverted triangle, rectangle, or anything in between.

Understanding your body shape helps you choose clothes that enhance your natural features and make you feel confident.

  • Celebrating your favourite features: Think about the parts of your body you love the most. Whether it's your shoulders, waist, legs, or arms, your wardrobe can be curated to accentuate these features.

  • Finding the right fit: Fit is everything! Clothes that fit well not only look better but also make you feel better. Pay attention to sizing, alterations, or tailoring if needed. Don't be afraid to go a size up or down based on what flatters your body shape best. Remember, different styles and brands will sit differently even when the number on the tag stays the same. Don’t simply dress your number, dress for what fits!

  • Body-positive inspiration: Follow body-positive influencers and fashion bloggers who celebrate diversity in body shapes. Seeing a variety of body types confidently rocking different styles can motivate you to embrace and celebrate your own uniqueness, and inspire with styles you may not have thought to wear.

Remember, your body is unique, and your style should celebrate that uniqueness. It's not about conforming to societal standards but about expressing your individuality with confidence.

So, rock what makes you feel good and let your style reflect the amazing person you are!

Experimentation and Refinement: It's Playtime!

Now is the time to step out of your comfort zone! Experiment with styles, fabrics, and trends. You might just stumble upon a new favourite look. Spoiler alert: it's okay to make style blunders (I still do it, too!).

What Have We Learned?

Here's the golden rule – your style is all about you (did you see that one coming?). It's about expressing your fabulous self and feeling amazing doing it.

Don’t get hung up on the trends; this is your runway. Own it, embrace it, and let your wardrobe shout your unique story.

In this style journey, every outfit is a chapter, and every trend is a footnote. Enjoy the process of discovering, defining, experimenting, and refining – because the most important thing about your style is that it's authentically and unapologetically you.

Let's make your wardrobe a conversation starter, a storybook of your adventures, and a canvas for your one-of-a-kind self.
